What does an idea need to have for you to start seeing it in images? Is there a moment when you know where it’s going visually, or do you need to start making things in order to discover it?
I usually need to start making things in order to discover where they might lead. I may have an intuition about the direction I want to take, but I rarely have a clear image in mind at the beginning. I’m more interested in finding a question that opens up possibilities than starting with a preconceived answer. Perhaps because of visual fatigue, I’m also increasingly aware that the things that resonate with me most aren’t necessarily visual. It could be a conversation, a sentence I read in a book, or a moment while I’m cycling, when one sound seems to find an unexpected harmony with another. There’s something fascinating about the invisible fabric that forms between experiences and encounters, visual or otherwise, that I wasn’t expecting to find. For me, these connections are often a much more powerful creative trigger than any single image. I’m less interested in the individual form of something than in the relationships that emerge between things.
